To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsacvet.com\/blog\/recognizing-pet-diabetes-and-how-to-care-for-your-diabetic-pet\/\">keep them at their fittest<\/a>, we have some ideas for healthy pet treats that tick all the boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Single Serving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While many food items that should never be given or made available to pets, there are numerous options that are considered okay. To give your pet a snack or two between meals, check out these single ingredient options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Raw apple bites<\/li><li>Frozen sardines<\/li><li>Brown rice or quinoa<\/li><li>Red bell pepper slices<\/li><li>Cauliflower, broccoli or Cabbage bites (go easy, these cruciferous veggies can cause gas)<\/li><li>Canned or cooked (unsweetened) pumpkin&nbsp;<\/li><li>Lightly steamed or bite-sized raw carrots<\/li><li>A small bite of cheese<\/li><li>Dried fruit, such as apricots<\/li><li>Fresh blueberries<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsacvet.com\/blog\/toxic-treat-is-xylitol-in-peanut-butter-and-other-common-products\/\">Xylitol-free peanut butter<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real Pet Treats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem with most commercial pet treats is that they are loaded with artificial flavors and preservatives. That doesn\u2019t mean that these aren\u2019t delicious to your pet, but eating too many on a daily basis can have an effect on their weight, overall health, and even their longevity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your pet deserves tasty treats (especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsacvet.com\/blog\/mission-impossible-effective-ways-to-house-train-your-dog\/\">when training<\/a>), which is why you may decide to make them yourself. You can control exactly what they\u2019re eating and their portion sizes, to boot. If we had to eat the same food every day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsacvet.com\/blog\/feline-preferences-should-you-build-a-catio\/\">we\u2019d get bored too<\/a>. So why not make your own healthy pet treats to shake it up a bit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scrumptious Snacks!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweet potatoes are plentiful in fall and winter, but they are available year round to make some of these healthy pet treats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Roast 2 large sweet potatoes and allow them to cool. Split in half and scoop out the flesh with a fork.&nbsp;<\/li><li>You\u2019ll need about 7 cups of different flours. Use oat, rice, barley or wheat flour.<\/li><li>Add \u00bc cup flax seed.<\/li><li>Mix together \u00bc cup honey with 2-3 cups of hot water.<\/li><li>Add sweet potatoes, honey and water to flours, and mix well.<\/li><li>Let rest for 15 minutes<\/li><li>Roll into \u00bc inch balls or cut into your favorite shape. Bake for 45 minutes at 300 degrees. Leave in the oven to cure.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These tuna treats are pleasing to the palettes of both cats and dogs. They pack loads of flavor and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Combine a can of tuna (in water not oil) with about a \u00bd cup of water. Either mash with a fork or place in a food processor to blend. Pour into an empty ice cube tray and freeze. Then place them in a ziploc baggie and store for up to 6 months.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healthy Pet Treats for Days<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another go-to recipe for healthy pet treats might be this one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mix together 1 cup flour with \u00bd cup rolled oats and \u00bd cup brewer\u2019s yeast. In a separate bowl whisk 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil into \u00bd cup beef or chicken stock. Mix wet and dry ingredients then roll out the dough to \u00bc inch thickness. Cut and bake for 15-20 minutes at 375 degrees.
