Some pet emergencies are much less obvious, however, making it difficult to tell whether or not your pet needs immediate medical attention or if you can just \u201cwait and see.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to any type of veterinary emergency, timing is critical and can mean the difference between a successful outcome and a tragedy. Knowing how to recognize a pet emergency should be in every pet owners arsenal, and the team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsacvet.com\/\">East Sacramento Veterinary Center<\/a> can get you started!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognizing a Pet Emergency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some health threats are immediately obvious, many are much more subtle. It\u2019s up to the pet owner to decipher what constitutes a pet emergency, and to seek help for their pet right away.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your pet is experiencing any of the following situations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsacvet.com\/\">contact us<\/a> right away:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Physical trauma (such as being hit by a vehicle of falling from two or more floors)<\/li><li>Fighting with another animal (even if there are no visible wounds)<\/li><li>Choking or uncontrolled coughing<\/li><li>Heat stress or heat stroke<\/li><li>Ingestion of a toxic substance (antifreeze, rat poison, Xylitol, chocolate, etc.)<\/li><li>Bleeding from the mouth, nose, or anus<\/li><li>Any injury to the eye<\/li><li>Broken bones or fractures<\/li><li>Seizure<\/li><li>Straining or inability to urinate<\/li><li>Sudden disorientation<\/li><li>Difficulty delivering puppies or kittens (more than 3-4 hours between each delivery or noticeable distress)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acting on a Hunch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You know your pet better than anyone, and many a veterinary emergency has been detected by merely noting that a pet is acting \u201coff\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastsacvet.com\/pet-wellness.html\">Pay close attention<\/a> to your pet\u2019s habits and behavior, and note any changes you see. It\u2019s never wrong to give us a call or to schedule an appointment for your pet to rule out a medical issue.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other signs of illness\/pain that may arise include:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Excessive panting<\/li><li>Unusual vocalization<\/li><li>Vomiting\/diarrhea that continues for over 24 hours<\/li><li>Restlessness<\/li><li>Limping<\/li><li>Difficulty breathing<\/li><li>Loss of appetite<\/li><li>Wincing, moving away, or reacting aggressively when touched in a certain area<\/li><li>Swollen, hard abdomen<\/li><li>Collapse&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be Prepared!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a few things ready ahead of time can lower your stress and allow you to react more quickly during a pet emergency. Gather your pet\u2019s health care items in one easy-to-access location, including their medications, medical records, first aid kit, leash, collar, and carrier\/crate.
